Help a girl decide? Please?

How about a little sew-along? Sunni, at A Fashionable Stitch is hosting a Two in One Sew-Along.  Since I had the pattern already, and also some fabric ( Lord knows, lots of fabric...) and intentions of making a shirt dress or two, I decided to play along.

 This is the pattern:
Simplicity 1880

My fabric? I have a couple of choices..

So maybe you can help me decide. I am totally stumped...will it be the fresh beachy stripe  or a classic faded chambray?  The navy ditsy floral lawn or a bold pink gingham? The vintage fruity cotton  or a pink/gray/white doily print?

I'd love for you to share your thoughts. I am going to do the shirtwaist version with 3/4 sleeves.  Until then, here's a little peek at a project in the works:

  1. What a great pattern! I love the choices offered for collars and sleeves. Let's see-fabric: the third one is my fave for its vintage vibe. I also love the pink and white gingham. Have fun choosing :-)

  2. All of your choices have a wonderful vintage/retro feeling. So how vintage do you want to be? The gingham one makes me think Donna Reed...but for a contemporary retro feel I vote for the stripes.

  3. I love the stripes myself! I also agree with Carolyn refrencing the contemporary retro feel!

  4. My vote is for the pink gingham. I think you could "rock" it. You have some cute jackets that would work with the dress.

  5. All the fabrics would look great in this style, but I thin the chambray would make a classy shirt dress that you would wear forever.

  6. I like the third fabric with the fruits. It would be a big nod towards vintage, though. So you really need to be up for the retro trend.

Totally off topic. I am about to start McCalls blouse 6512, greatly inspired by your white version for the basics sew a long. I am wondering how to finish the seams of this one. My fabric is dotted swiss. The pattern instructions just have you leave them raw. With the unusual design I am not sure it would be possible to try french seams or flat felled seams. What did you do?

  7. I agree, great pattern. I vote gingham with a cute floral for the collar facing.

  8. This will be cute in any of the fabrics you've picked...but I like either the fruity one with the retro vibe or the pink gingham!

  9. I am loving the stripe and the 3rd from top choice (flowers?)
I love the idea of shirt dresses but don't have any as I need a serious FBA on any of my tops and the ready to wear ones are too gap-y or baggy below the chest. Oh and I don't know how to do a FBA yet.

  10. I have been thinking of doing this sew along also and thought of chambray, so that's my obvious vote for you!

  12. OMG OMG - the 3rd from the top! Oh I love that one! I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! If I had that fabric, it would be THE fabric for my shirtdress for the sewalong! Gah!

  13. I like the stripe or the 3rd one down - the fruit. I know gingham has been popular in shirts this year. But, personally, I'm not a big fan of it. It can get a little too "Ellie Mae" for my taste depending on the size of the check. Hey, but that's just me!! I know whatever you choose will look great.

  16. Karin, You are right. The McCalls blouse 6512 was a tricky one to do finely finished seams. I took the easy way out and serged all the seams, and focused on doing the very best finishing that I could on the neck band and the hem. My fabric was rayon, and serging was an okay option and has held up nicely through several washings.

  17. Oh but I love the vintage print! It's so cute, and I think the light blue of the background color would be really great on you. The thought of a shirtdress sounds delightfully cool, and were I not pregnant and struggling to have any energy left to make even a simple t-shirt, I'd totally be in for such a sew along.

  18. Ooh the third from the top is gorgeous!! I actually have the first and fourth in my stash though and would love any tips on lining up that gingham!! :) I think I'm going solid for the practice and maybe gingham later. . . .

  19. Its like you read my mind! You seem to know so
much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something.
I think that you could do with some pics to drive the message home a little bit, but instead of that, this is excellent blog.
A fantastic read. I'll definitely be back.
Look into my homepage :: thank
